Ensuring Fair & Informed Elections: The Whitby Chamber of Commerce Election Campaign Protocol
Elections play a vital role in shaping the future of our communities, and at the Whitby Chamber of Commerce, we are committed to fostering an informed electorate while maintaining a non-partisan stance. Our Election Campaign Protocol is designed to ensure fairness, provide access to credible candidates, and facilitate meaningful discussions for our members during federal, provincial, and municipal elections.
A Non-Partisan Approach
The Whitby Chamber of Commerce does not endorse any candidate or political party. Instead, our focus is on sharing information and providing a platform for candidates to engage with our members equitably. By offering structured opportunities for discussion, we empower our members to make informed choices in elections that directly impact businesses and the local economy.
Who Qualifies as a Candidate?
To ensure a fair and transparent process, candidates must meet specific criteria to participate in Chamber events:
Federal & Provincial Elections:
- Must be officially recognized by a political party.
- The political party must have secured at least 5% of valid ballots in the last general election and hold a seat in the House of Commons or the Ontario Legislature.
Municipal Elections:
- Must be officially registered as a candidate with the town or regional office.
- Due to the high number of candidates in municipal elections, priority will be given to candidates for Regional Chair, Mayor, and regional and ward seats.
How We Support an Informed Electorate
During election periods, the Chamber will:
- Share general election information with members.
- Organize events that provide equal access to qualified candidates.
- Utilize Chamber communication channels to inform members about election-related opportunities.
- Publish responses to Chamber-issued questions from all recognized candidates.
- Support returning officers in disseminating election information.
- Host campaign stops for recognized party leaders, ensuring non-partisan engagement.
To maintain neutrality and fairness, the Chamber will:
- Avoid hosting MP, MPP, Mayor, or Regional Chair events after the candidate registration period opens.
- Exclude any unregistered individuals or those not approved by a recognized party from election activities.
- Prohibit direct canvassing or campaign material distribution at Chamber events.
- Prevent candidates from using Chamber offices for campaign-related activities.
- Refrain from endorsing or appearing to endorse any candidate.
Candidate Engagement Opportunities
To ensure members have equal access to credible candidates, the Chamber may host the following events:
- All-Candidates Meetings (Federal & Provincial Elections)
- An impartial, experienced moderator will lead discussions.
- Candidates will be invited well in advance, and the event will be marketed to members.
- The meeting will feature opening and closing remarks from candidates, followed by a Q&A session.
- Invitations will be extended to all recognized candidates.
- All-Candidates Receptions (Municipal Elections)
- A larger venue will be used to accommodate candidates and attendees.
- Candidates will have designated areas to display campaign materials.
- Members will have the opportunity to engage with candidates directly.
- Short remarks from candidates may be included, depending on attendance numbers.
Encouraging Business Engagement in Elections
We believe that a thriving business community is built on informed decision-making. By providing a fair and transparent process for candidate engagement, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce upholds its mission of advocating for local businesses and encouraging civic participation.
